WHAT IS THE CLEAN AIR STANDARD

The CLEAN AIR Standard is a normative document published by the CLEAN AIR FORUM and ÖTI – Institut für Ökologie, Technik und Innovation GmbH

The Standard sets the general and specific requirements which need to be met in order to permit the assignment of the (CLEAN AIR) label to interiors. Moreover, it includes the needed conditions of the indoor air quality of new or renovated, ready to move in interiors after all building and interior works are finished, before the space is handed on to the user.

REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERIOR AIR QUALITY IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CLEAN AIR STANDARD

Materials used in interior equipment need to be low in emissions. This can be proved by e.g. certificates of examination or presentation of one of the following environmental certificates: EU Eco Label, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Österreichisches Umweltzeichen, Blauer Engel, natureplus, Emicode, IS-OETI TESTED, examination of emission behaviour according to AgBB scheme.

The required materials exist sufficiently on the market, therefore their procurement does not present an unusual challenge.

The most important parameters of the indoor air quality examination are:

  • Examination of smell
  • total volatile organic compounds – TVOC (≤ 300 µg/m³) inklusive single substance analysis
  • Formaldehyd content

Examinations are conducted by experts of the ÖTI, which has, in accordance with ÖNORM S 5701, certified smell examiners at their disposal. The ÖTI also has an analytical laboratory with highly modern equipment and is accredited to perform interior air examinations.

CLEAN AIR CERTIFICATION BENEFITS ALL PARTIES INVOLVED

The CLEAN AIR Certification offers a symbiosis that leads to good indoor air quality. The property developer or investor takes the first step towards a healthier round-about and initiates a chain reaction of positive effects, including:

  • Being part of an actual eco-system
  • Protection against materials with negative effects on the indoor air quality
  • Material advantages of the property value
  • Appreciation of the environment
  • Assured system evaluation of a competent and accredited examination institute
  • Support of future initiative

Altogether these effects represent strong arguments and motivations to improve our quality of life as well as refusing to apathetically plan and deconstruct.
